MARADONA VS MESSI IN ARGENTINA:-

The former Ballon d’Or winner and Italian great played against two of the great Argentinian footballing icons but he ranks Diego Maradona slightly ahead of the modern-day great Lionel Messi.

Fabio Cannavaro admits that Lionel Messi is one of the top players who have played the game but he thinks Diego Maradona is one of the all-time great players and the former World Cup winner is from another world.

Debate has always been raised between the two great footballing icons due to similar way of play and their magic of dribbling on the field.

Maradona’s international career with Argentina is none other than a fairy tale he played 91 matches for Argentina and scored 34 goals.

Maradona played in four FIFA World Cups, including the 1986 World Cup in Mexico where he led Argentina from the front and helped them to victory over West Germany in the final, and won the world cup for the country and also won the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player.

Cannavaro admits that both are the great players and the stats and achievement they have cant be repeated again for a long time but he thinks there is something different in Maradona and rates him as one of the greats of all time.

Cannavaro told Sky Sports “I have great admiration for Messi,”

“He is one of the best player in modern era.

“But Maradona is different because football was different. They kicked him a lot but he was always in control and he was tough.

“Messi is a top player but Maradona is another world. I never compare him with other players. I never saw Pele but I watched Maradona, for seven years I saw every game.

“He’s not one of the best player, he’s the best in the world.”

Debates are still going on between the two greats, who is the best player of all time.

Roberto Ayala, who has seen both Messi and Maradona play very closely in his playing career told Fox Sports about both of the great players: “I played with both of them, with Diego I was taking my first steps. They are two footballing greats, and when he retires, Messi will be remembered.

“I don’t know if it’ll be like Diego, it doesn’t matter. They are different.

“Diego was pure art in all his mannerisms, Messi a Speedy Gonzalez who carries the ball two centimeters from his foot.”
